It's a bit late because at the last second I was sent to NYC for my birthday, but here it is without further ado...

For the past few years I've made a birthday mix of my favorite songs from the previous year. This year, you get 27 from 2012. I can't believe I'm this many years old - it really doesn't feel like I can have been alive that long. I still feel 23. But 27 means more songs on the birthday mix, so it's fine.

27 from 2012 from marie.squyres on 8tracks Radio.

The most wonderful team in the entire world, my best friends in the world last summer and beyond.

Title: From Australia to Africa
Fandom: Original
Word Count: 1,828
Summary: Little Sara Smith has woken up with an Alexander-ic problem.
Warnings: None
Additional Notes: In my advanced fiction course this semester, we wrote two short stories. Our final assignment was to revise one of those stories. This was the revision result from a very different story. This is one scene, expanded and tweaked, taken from a long narrative about a girl's hair throughout her life, which was based off this personal essay I wrote last year. Nowhere where I want it to be yet, but it's a work in progress. Haven't really played with children's fiction before, but it's something I've been thinking about.

In keeping with tradition from last year, I present to you, in true hobbit birthday fashion, a present of the musical variety. This is a mix of my 26 favorite songs from the past year. It's a bit late on the day, but I've been honing the list for a couple of weeks now.

In honor of my birthday, I've made a mix with my 25 favorite songs from the last year and a bit.
(I had to restrict it to recent songs because I wasn't getting under 60 without the time cap.)

So enjoy my reverse birthday gift to you, in hobbit fashion. Download either the full mix or individual tracks at your fancy by clicking the music notes next to the song titles.

Title: The Boy Who Exists
Fandom: Creative Nonfiction
Word Count: 992
Summary: A brevity essay about Harry Potter. Stress on brevity.
Warnings: None.
Additional Notes: This was written with a very specific set of guidelines. I'm not kidding. The professor gave us a handout numbered 1-35, and each number was an instruction for the sentence. So 35 sentences that had to meet specifications, and then five sentences to wrap it all up. Only 40 sentences to briefly touch on Harry Potter. Make of it what you will, lol.

When I meet people and they say they're so into Harry Potter, I can't help but be super skeptical, politely asking them questions to see just how much of a fan they are. Perhaps Dumbledore would not approve of me judging others in such a way, but maybe Alastor Moody would.Collapse )

Title: Heartstrings in Sweden
Fandom: Creative Nonfiction
Word Count: 1460
Summary: A memoir essay about my time in Sweden in May 2008.
Warnings: None.
Additional Notes: Written for ENGL 3440. The assignment was for a nature essay, so it concentrates much more on the animals and the landscape than the people. But, for the record, those people are the reason I made the effort to go to Sweden in the first place.

Sweden was continuously gorgeous – every inch of the country that I was exposed to was alive, relishing in the onset of summer.Collapse )
